Acoustic Underlay for LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) — What You Need to Know

Acoustic underlay for LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is a topic that trips up many installers. LVT's rigidity and thinness create specific requirements that differ from laminate or timber floors. Get this wrong and you risk joint failure, poor acoustic performance, or voiding your floor warranty.
Why LVT Is Different
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) — also called SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) or WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) flooring — is significantly denser and stiffer than laminate. This creates two challenges:
- Subfloor flatness is critical. LVT has less ability to bridge subfloor irregularities. Any bump or hollow will telegraph through.
- Many LVT warranties restrict underlay thickness. Some manufacturers limit underlay to 1.5mm or 3mm maximum. Always check warranty terms before specifying.
Click LVT vs Glue-Down LVT
Click LVT (Floating Installation)
Click LVT floats on the underlay — same principle as laminate. A dedicated acoustic underlay is appropriate and beneficial. Specify an underlay within the manufacturer's thickness tolerance (typically 2–3mm maximum).
Recommended: 3mm Recycled Rubber Acoustic Underlay (54 dB ΔLw)
Glue-Down LVT
Glue-down LVT is adhered directly to the subfloor — no underlay is used between the floor and substrate. In this case, acoustic treatment must come from the subfloor itself (acoustic screed, floating subfloor) or from ceiling treatment below.
SPC Flooring — Special Considerations
Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) is a rigid LVT variant that is particularly dense and dimensionally stable. Many SPC floors come with a factory-attached IXPE or cork backing. If an SPC floor includes a pre-attached underlay, using additional underlay beneath may void the warranty. However, if the backing is minimal foam, replacing it with a proper acoustic underlay will deliver significantly better performance.
Recommended Products for LVT
3mm Recycled Rubber (54 dB ΔLw)
The primary recommendation for click LVT and SPC. Thin enough to satisfy most LVT manufacturer requirements while delivering genuine acoustic performance. High compression resistance prevents joint stress.
Cork & Rubber Composite (3mm)
An excellent alternative, especially over UFH. The natural cork provides thermal buffering and acoustic damping, while the rubber base provides the resilience and compression resistance LVT demands.
3mm Acoustic Soundproof Underlay
Multi-application rubber sheet suitable for use under LVT, laminate, and on walls. Provides up to 54 dB impact noise reduction with a thin profile.
Installation Note: Subfloor Preparation is Non-Negotiable
LVT tolerates maximum ±2mm subfloor flatness over 2 metres. Prepare the subfloor meticulously with a self-levelling compound before laying acoustic underlay. Lumps in the subfloor that acoustic underlay cannot bridge will create stress concentrations in LVT joints, causing premature wear or failure.
