From our acoustic insulation specialist — terminology can be confusing, so here is the clear answer.

In practice, acoustic underlay and acoustic mat refer to the same type of product — a resilient acoustic layer placed beneath a floor finish. The terms are used interchangeably in the UK market. However, there are some subtle distinctions worth understanding.

Acoustic Underlay

Typically refers to rolls or sheets laid beneath hard floor finishes (laminate, LVT, engineered wood, parquet). Usually 3-12mm thick. Products like our 6mm rubber underlay are classic acoustic underlays.

Acoustic Mat

Sometimes used to describe thicker, heavier products used under screed or in industrial/commercial applications. Also commonly used for automotive and vehicle applications — our CLD mats are acoustic mats in the vehicle deadening sense.

What Matters More Than Terminology

The key specifications are: ΔLw (impact noise improvement), material density, thickness, and substrate compatibility. Whether a product is called an underlay or a mat, check these figures. Our 3mm rubber, 6mm rubber, and 12mm system all have independently tested performance data available. Read our technical guide for full details.
