Best Soundproof Isolation Clips UK 2025: GenieClip vs Resilient Bar Compared

Isolation clips are one of the most important components in any high-performance soundproofing system. They decouple a new wall or ceiling surface from the existing structure, preventing vibration from bridging across and re-radiating as sound on the other side. But not all clips are equal — and choosing the wrong one can cost you 6–10 dB of hard-won acoustic performance.

How Isolation Clips Work

When sound hits a wall or ceiling, it causes the structure to vibrate. Without decoupling, those vibrations travel through any direct fixings into the new plasterboard, which re-radiates the sound. An isolation clip creates a mechanical break:

  1. The clip attaches to the existing structure (joists, studs, masonry)
  2. A rubber or polymer isolation collar inside the clip absorbs vibrational energy
  3. A metal channel connects through the isolator to the new plasterboard
  4. The new surface floats freely without any rigid connection to the structure

Resilient Bars (Basic Decoupling)

Resilient bars are the entry-level decoupling solution. A thin metal channel screws to joists or studs, and plasterboard is fixed to the channel rather than directly to the structure.

Aspect Details
Performance gain 8–15 dB over direct-fixed board
Cost £2–£4/m
Space required 25–40mm
Short-circuit risk High — if screw contacts structure, performance collapses
Best for Budget upgrades, limited space, light noise

Critical limitation: If a plasterboard screw accidentally contacts the joist through the bar, isolation is completely lost. This is a common installation error.

GenieClip LB (High Performance)

The GenieClip LB uses a rubber-isolated cradle holding an independent metal channel, creating a truly decoupled connection. GenieClips consistently outperform resilient bars by 4–8 dB in independent testing and are specified in Robust Details.

Aspect Details
Performance gain 14–22 dB over direct-fixed board
Cost £3–£5 per clip
Space required 40–60mm
Short-circuit risk Very low — physical separation maintained
Best for High-performance walls and ceilings, Part E compliance

SilentCloud Isolation Clips (Direct-to-Wall System)

SilentCloud's proprietary isolation clips work as part of the complete SBx board system. They combine the clip, channel and board into one optimised assembly for direct-to-wall applications where minimal room loss is critical.

Aspect Details
Performance gain 18–28 dB (in full SBx system)
Space required 25–45mm (most space-efficient)
Best for Party walls where space cannot be sacrificed

Which Isolation Clip Should You Choose?

Scenario Recommended Reason
Budget ceiling upgrade Resilient bars Low cost, adequate for light noise
Moderate wall noise SilentCloud clips + SBx Space-efficient, 25–35 dB gain
Severe neighbour noise GenieClip LB independent wall Maximum performance, 38–50 dB
Ceiling with impact noise GenieClip LB ceiling system Best impact isolation available
Part E compliance GenieClip LB (Robust Details) Specified in Part E documentation

The Golden Rule: Never Short-Circuit Your Isolation

Never create a rigid connection between the decoupled surface and the structure. Always use plasterboard screws short enough to fix into the channel only — not through it into the joist or stud behind.

Isolation Clips + Acoustic Mineral Wool = Maximum Performance

Always combine isolation clips with acoustic mineral wool (100mm Rockwool RW3 or similar) packed into the cavity. The mineral wool absorbs airborne sound energy and adds 3–6 dB to system performance.
