How to Soundproof a Flat Floor Without Losing Height

One of the most common constraints we encounter when specifying acoustic solutions for flats is floor build-up height. Old London conversions, period buildings, and modern flats with low ceilings all face this challenge. Here is how to get maximum acoustic performance with minimum floor raise.

Why Floor Height Matters

Every millimetre of floor build-up affects door clearances, threshold heights, and sometimes stair riser heights. In extreme cases, adding 12mm to a floor can require all doors to be rehung and new thresholds fitted — significant extra cost.

Minimum-Height Acoustic Solutions

  • 3mm rubber (54dB): Our 3mm underlay is the thinnest genuine acoustic product — only 3mm floor raise with real performance
  • 6mm rubber (74dB): Our 6mm underlay — 6mm raise, significantly better performance

When Height Is Non-Negotiable

If you genuinely cannot raise the floor at all, the alternative is treating the ceiling below — an independent ceiling system can be installed without raising the floor above at all. Contact our team for advice on ceiling-only solutions that achieve similar acoustic improvement.
