Honest answer: 3mm provides genuine improvement, but for serious noise problems — especially in flats — it is rarely enough on its own.

What 3mm Achieves

Our 3mm rubber underlay achieves up to 54dB impact noise reduction. That is a real improvement — but compare it to 74dB from our 6mm version.

When 3mm Is Sufficient

  • Detached house — no flat below
  • Top floor flat — no neighbours below
  • Minor noise problem only
  • Budget is the primary constraint
  • Floor raise absolutely cannot exceed 3mm

When 3mm Is Not Enough

  • Mid-floor flat with noise-sensitive neighbours below
  • Part E compliance required
  • Severe, constant noise disturbance

For serious problems: 6mm at 74dB or 12mm system. The price difference is modest; the performance difference is not.
