Soundproofing between flats is one of the most requested topics in our 15 years in the acoustic insulation business — and for good reason. Noise from neighbours in flats is genuinely one of the most disruptive living situations in the UK.

The Two Types of Noise in Flats

Impact noise (footsteps from the flat above) and airborne noise (voices, TV) are both common in flats. They require different solutions. Impact noise is best addressed through the floor structure — our 6mm acoustic underlay (74dB) is the most effective product for this. Airborne noise requires mass — either a heavier floor system or additional wall treatment.

What Actually Works Between Flats

For the floor: 6mm rubber underlay as part of a floating floor system is the most practical solution for most flat owners. For compliance-critical projects (new builds, HMO conversions): 12mm acoustic flooring system. For walls: independent wall lining with acoustic mineral wool.

Realistic Expectations

Acoustic underlay will significantly reduce impact noise from footsteps — a noticeable, meaningful improvement. It will provide moderate reduction in airborne noise. It will not make your flat silent. For extreme noise problems, you need a full system including ceiling treatment below. See our complete flat soundproofing guide.
