6mm Acoustic Rubber Underlay UK | 74dB Impact Reduction

Our 6mm acoustic rubber underlay is the UK's highest-performing thin-profile acoustic underlay, achieving up to 74dB impact noise reduction. Made from recycled rubber crumb, it complies with Building Regulations Approved Document E and is suitable for use under laminate, engineered wood, LVT, and other hard floor finishes. If you live in a flat, are converting a property, or simply need to dramatically reduce footstep noise reaching the floor below — this is the product professionals specify.

Why 6mm? The Performance Sweet Spot

6mm is the optimum thickness for acoustic rubber underlay under most hard floor finishes. Thinner products (3mm) achieve ΔLw ratings of 50–54dB. Our 6mm underlay achieves up to 74dB impact noise reduction — significantly better performance without adding excessive floor build-up height.

Thickness Impact Noise (ΔLw) Floor Raise Best For
3mm rubber ~54dB 3mm Budget builds, minor improvement
6mm rubber 74dB 6mm Flats, Part E, significant noise reduction
12mm system 30dB impact + 58dB airborne 12mm Full Part E compliance, concrete or timber

Who Uses 6mm Acoustic Rubber Underlay?

  • Flat owners and landlords — reduce impact noise between floors to meet neighbour complaints or lettings requirements
  • Developers and contractors — achieve Part E compliance in new build and conversion separating floors
  • Homeowners — dramatically reduce footstep noise in upper floor rooms, particularly over kitchens and living areas
  • Housing associations — meet acoustic standards for social housing and HMO conversions

Is It Part E Compliant?

Yes — when specified as part of a correctly designed acoustic floor assembly, our 6mm rubber underlay contributes to meeting the Building Regulations Approved Document E impact noise target of L'nT,w ≤ 62dB (new build) or ≤ 64dB (conversion). The product is most effective when combined with a suitable floating floor and ceiling treatment below.

How to Install 6mm Acoustic Rubber Underlay

  1. Prepare the substrate — clean, level, and dry
  2. Lay the rubber underlay across the floor, butting joins tightly (do not overlap)
  3. Turn up at the perimeter by 10mm to form an acoustic break at the wall junction
  4. Tape joins with acoustic tape to prevent movement
  5. Lay your chosen floor finish over the top — do not glue through the underlay to the substrate
  6. Trim the perimeter turn-up flush when skirting is fitted

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use 6mm underlay under LVT (luxury vinyl tile)?

Yes. Our 6mm rubber underlay is suitable under most LVT products. Check with your LVT manufacturer that their product is compatible with a 6mm floating underlay — most quality LVT brands are. Avoid using with direct-stick LVT.

Is 6mm underlay compatible with underfloor heating?

Yes. The rubber construction is compatible with electric and warm water underfloor heating systems. The thermal resistance is low enough to allow effective heat transfer while still providing acoustic performance.

What is the difference between 6mm and 3mm acoustic underlay?

Our 6mm achieves up to 74dB impact noise reduction vs approximately 54dB for a 3mm product. For most applications where meaningful noise reduction is required — particularly in flats and multi-storey buildings — 6mm is strongly recommended over 3mm.

How much 6mm acoustic underlay do I need?

Measure your floor area in m² and add 10% for wastage around cuts and joins. Our underlay is sold per m² or per roll — use our product page to select the quantity you need.
